US military moves ISIS detainees from Syria to secure facilities in Iraq

(MENAFN) The US military announced on Wednesday that it has initiated a mission to move ISIS (Daesh) detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq to ensure they remain in secure detention facilities, according to CENTCOM statements.

The operation began with the successful transfer of 150 ISIS fighters from a detention center in Hasakah province to a secure facility in Iraq. "Ultimately, up to 7,000 ISIS detainees could be transferred from Syria to Iraqi-controlled facilities," the statement noted.

CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper emphasized that the US is working "closely" with regional partners, including Iraq, and acknowledged their role in sustaining efforts to defeat ISIS. He added: "Facilitating the orderly and secure transfer of ISIS detainees is critical to preventing a breakout that would pose a direct threat to the United States and regional security."
