Spain warns US Venezuela actions set ‘dangerous precedent’

(MENAFN) Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares on Monday criticized the recent US military action in Venezuela, saying it breaches international law and establishes “a very dangerous precedent for the future.”

In remarks to media, Albares described Washington’s intervention and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as “clearly contrary to international law,” emphasizing that peace and democracy must rest on respect for sovereignty.

“Recalling Iraq, the use of force does not bring stability or democracy, but chaos for nations and regions,” he said, adding that Spain would not “resign itself to the law of the strongest being imposed.”

Albares noted that Spain was among the first governments to react to the US action and led opposition to it in Europe and Latin America. “I would have liked a stronger EU statement,” he said, highlighting that Spain helped ensure the declaration began with a call to uphold international law.

He also offered Spain’s role as a mediator, citing the presence of around 200,000 Spanish nationals in Venezuela and 400,000 Venezuelans living in Spain. Albares said he is in contact with Venezuelan opposition figures residing in Madrid.

“Spain will always play a role to bridge and unite positions when it comes to a fraternal state like Venezuela,” he added, warning of the “extreme danger” posed by the “power vacuum” following Maduro’s capture.

Albares confirmed Spain would participate in an emergency UN Security Council session to present its stance on the US intervention. He called for a “moral rearming” to protect a rules-based international order, saying, “To allow basic principles of international law to be dismantled right in front of our eyes … has an impact on every country around the world and allows democracy to crumble too.”
